Knee injections

Local Anaesthetic plus Steroids

The anti-inflammatory action of corticosteroids seems to be responsible for the alleviation of joint pain. Infection is an uncommon complication when adequate skin preparation is performed. The major disadvantage of intra-articular corticosteroids is their short duration of action, averaging two to three weeks. However, a small percentage of patients with osteoarthritis may sustain prolonged relief from one or two injections.

Hyaluronic acid injection

Some hyaluronic acid is already in the fluid in your joints. In people with osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid gets thinner. When this happens, there isn't enough hyaluronic acid to protect the joint. Injections can put more hyaluronic acid into your knee joint to help protect it.
Hyaluronic acid injections may give you more pain relief than oral medicines. These injections can help the pain stay away for 6 months to a year, sometimes longer. Unfortunately, these injections don't help everyone.

Nerve block at the knee

Nerve block is a general term, but it basically means the injection of a local anesthetic around peripheral nerves providing sensation to the knee. It is used in certain pain conditions when pain is secondary to nerve entrapment or direct nerve injury (e.g. after knee replacement.
